Tip 3 - Keywords Choose your keywords carefully and try not to have too many as this can dilute the strength of your main one’s. Using kingfisher site as another example, your keywords should be something like Laptop, Laptops, Computers, PC’s, Computer accessories etc. Please note that these keywords will be very competitive with many other larger and more established websites so I would suggest that you go for a more niche set of keywords depending on what it is you do, for example ‘refurbished laptop’s, ‘Acer aspire pc’, ‘HP laser printer’ etc
Tip 4 - Meta Tags Yes OK, so google doesn’t actually bother with meta tags now day’s but there are many other search engines out there who currently do such as Yahoo, Altavista, MSN etc. Google is just a business like many others and putting all your eggs in one basket by just concentrating on Google is ill advised. When using these free search engine optimization tips I suggest that you use meta tags within your website that contain many of your Keywords. The title of your pages need to be content related, for example your Laptops page needs to be called something like ‘Laptops from Kingfisher- Acer, Dell, Sony’ and it’s description tag needs to contain the same range of keywords as well. Please ensure that the keywords in your meta tags are also in the content of your web pages otherwise your website will be penalized for it.
Tip 5 - Content is King I’m sure you’ve come across this one before on your travels and whilst it doesn’t bear as much importance as it used to it is still a good technique to employ when optimizing your website to achieve high search engine rankings. Your websites copy needs to be well written and have plenty of it, the more the better. Please ensure that it is varied and that your keywords are scattered around your content and google will love you for it.
Tip 6 - Links This area of free search engine optimization tips is forever changing and is likely to continue so. Back in the old day’s websites would exchange links with each other to improve their search results (known as reciprocal linking) is no longer proving to be effective. When hunting for links with your website make sure that they are related to yours for example a computer repair site or one offering laptop insurance. Unrelated links can seriously damage your search engine placing and do not use link farms. Some websites offer links from strong relative sites for money which at the time of writing may work a little for your business but I don’t think it will be long before google and everyone else cottons on to this and starts to penalize you for it. One way links are far more effective. Why not have multiple sites and offer links back from one of those rather than your own main site....
Tip 7 - Alt tags and image names When developing a website many companies just give their websites images generic names such as image1.gif, image2,jpeg etc. What a waste! If it’s a picture of a laptop then call it a laptop, for example delllaptop.gif or hpprinterthumbnail.jpeg. Don’t neglect the power of your images alt tags either. This is what is displayed when you hover your mouse cursor over the image and you should include your descriptive keywords within these tags. For a good example of this hover over the grey ‘SEO’ box at the top right hand corner of this web page.
Tip 8 - Google page rank Now try not to get too obsessed with this one. Page rank is a score given to any webpage by google on how important it ranks that page. The higher the rank doesn’t always mean the higher the search engine placing though. It was once recommended that you only source links from websites with a high pagerank but I think it is more important to source links that are related to your site (but not in direct competition with it) and besides, a websites pagerank is always about three months old so a link from a 0 pagerank site today could end up being a link back from a site with a pagerank of 4 in a couple of months time, by then it will be more difficult to acquire a link from this site.
Tip 9 - DMOZ.org www.DMOZ.org is an open directory project editing by humans and in relation to google is the undisputed king of directories. Google uses this directory for some of it’s own search results and as the directory is edited by humans google knows that the websites listed are going to have relative content making DMOZ a valuable resource. Because of this I recommend that you submit your site to be listed but please note that as it is humanly edited so it can take a long time to be listed but the wait will be more than worth it. Please ensure that your website is complete and no parts of it are still in development and also that it is not full of third party or affiliates adverts such as google adsense for example and also make sure that you submit it to the correct category to avoid any unnecessary delays.
These tips are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to search engine optimization and there are many other more effective techniques that I use which I’m not going to tell you about I’m afraid. Otherwise I would be out of work!!!!!
