Here we list exactly what all that complicated terminology actually means with our jargon buster.
AltaVista This is an internet search engine and one of the very first created that was a true text data base of many of the worlds websites
Contact Form This is a form on a webpage that a visitor can fill in and then send the information to the website owner without them having to leave the site or use an email client. A good example of this can be found on my own contact page.
Data Transfer This is the transfer of data between a web server and its visitors computer. It can be a webpage in HTML, images, java script files etc. Many website hosting packages have a limit to the amount of data transfer allowed per month. Usually the larger a site is or the more busier it is will determine how much data transfer is required.
DMOZ A human edited directory of websites. Because this web directory is edited by humans and all website applications are manually checked and added Google uses this directory for some of it’s own search results. One of the best free search engine optimization tips that I can give you is to get your website listed with this directory.
Forum A forum is a chatroom found on many sites were visitors can post questions or comments to each other or even just have a good old chit chat together.
Guest Book These can be found on many websites and it basically allows the sites visitors to add comments to the guestbook. A good example would be an accommodation site and people who have stayed at the accommodation would leaving their comments on the website for other potential visitors to view.
Google A search engine and at the time of writing is the daddy of all search engines. Approximately 60-70% of searches on the internet in both the UK and the US are made using Google.
HTML This is a common programming language used to create web pages. It stands for Hyper Text Markup Language
High Search Engine Rankings What this basically means is when a user searches for one of your keywords on a search engine such as Google, Yahoo etc the search engine will return it’s results with yours included which will hopefully be highly ranked so stand more chance of a searcher clicking your site to visit.
Java Script A commonly used programming language used with many websites to mainly create dynamic content such as roll over buttons, pop up menus etc
Keywords This is a list of words or phrases that you want to be listed for on the search engines. For example if you are a computer supplier then some of your keywords might be - Computer, Laptop, PC, Printer, software etc
Links / Reciprocal Links A link is either text or an image that when click will take you too another location such as another page on the website you are on. Reciprocal links are when two websites exchange links with each other to try to gain a better search engine ranking. This technique is commonly used and is also mentioned further in my free search engine optimization tips section.
Meta Tags These are title tags given to different parts of a website or webpage. For example this website has the following meta tags to name a few Page title, Description, Keywords, Robots and many more.
Monetize / Monetization This is when you make money from a website by displaying adverts or PPC adds in your copy. When a visitor clicks one of these adverts you either earn a small fee for the click or earn a commission if that visitor then makes a purchase within an allotted time scale.
MSN Search This is a search engine owned by Microsoft. They also now have Live Search.
PPC / Pay Per Click PPC which stands for Pay Per Click means that a website will display adverts advertising third party products or services and when that sites visitor clicks one of these adverts then the website owner receives a small fee. They are only paid if the visitor actually clicks and advert hence the name Pay Per Click.
Search Engine Optimization / SEO A way of updating / optimizing a website to achieve high natural results on the leading search engines for its chosen search terms and Keywords.
Website Design The designing of a website by using either hand coded method with HTML or by using a WYSIWYG editor which stands for What You See Is What You Get such as Dreamweaver, Adobe GoLive, Netobjects Fusion etc .
Website Hosting When a website has been created you then need to upload it on to the internet for people to visit. This means that your site needs to be transfered to a Server which is basically a computer but is specifically designed to host websites. Website hosting can differ greatly between hosts and I have a fantastic package available starting from only £49 / $99 per year which I believe offers superb value for money.
Web Space This is how much space you are allowed on a web server to use to store your website. It is usually measured in Giga Bytes
Website Template Website templates are predesigned websites that allow you to quickly and cost effectively create your own website. They are usually configurable allowing you to change colour schemes, graphics, photo’s, text etc to suit your own taste or companies brand but the layout of the actual pages stay the same.
Yahoo This is another search engine that internet users use to search for websites.
